During my recent food craving trip to the DC area, I discovered a true gem — Busboys and Poets. Known for its deep-rooted connection to the community, this unique space is more than just a restaurant; it’s a cultural hub. With multiple locations and a mission to uplift racial and cultural connections, promote art, and inspire social change, Busboys and Poets stands as a beacon for inclusivity and community spirit. From the moment I stepped inside, I could feel the positive energy and welcoming vibe that permeates the space. Not to mention, the food experience was just as memorable.

Fried Catfish Included collard greens, capers, and tomato couli sauce
My Review: The catfish was cooked to perfection — light and fluffy on the inside, with a crispy golden coating on the outside. What truly stood out to me was the seasoning. So many restaurants struggle with getting fish seasoning just right, but at Busboys and Poets, they nailed it. The flavor was bold, yet balanced, complementing the delicate fish without overwhelming it. The collard greens added a touch of Southern comfort, while the capers and tomato couli sauce brought a delightful contrast of flavors. This dish was simple yet executed well.

Shrimp & Grits Included tailed shrimp, tomato, roasted corn, asparagus, Cajun cream sauce, and crab grits
My Review: As a big fan of Shrimp & Grits, I couldn’t resist ordering it. The shrimp were large and juicy — a nice departure from the small shrimp you find at other places. The Cajun cream sauce was creamy, lightly spicy, and flavorful, enhancing the overall dish without overpowering it. The crab grits were rich and comforting. This was a dish I could easily see myself coming back for again.

White Chocolate Banana Bread Pudding
Included a side of coconut ice cream (Homemade)
My Review: This was, without a doubt, the highlight of the meal. The bread pudding was served in a mini bundt presentation, which not only looked adorable but added an element of fun to the dessert. The texture was perfect — moist and flavorful. But what really took this dessert to another level was the coconut ice cream. The creaminess of the ice cream paired beautifully with the bread pudding, adding a tropical twist that made each bite even more indulgent. This dessert was a true standout and a must-try for anyone visiting.
Busboys and Poets is a place where food and culture come together seamlessly. The warm hospitality and community-focused atmosphere elevate the dining experience, while the dishes are thoughtfully crafted with great attention to flavor. If you’re in the DC area, make sure to check out Busboys and Poets and report back.
